CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Elizabeth “Lou” O’Brien has been named an assistant coach in the University of Virginia women’s rowing program by UVa head coach Kevin Sauer. O’Brien will coach the novice women in the Virginia program.

O’Brien comes to Virginia after one year of coaching the novice women at Ohio State. Prior to joining the rowing program at Ohio State, she was the women’s head rowing coach at Noble and Greenough School from 1994-97. She also served as the varsity women’s squash coach, the freshman field hockey coach and as an aerobics and conditioning instructor during her time at Noble and Greenough.

O’Brien graduated from Trinity College (Hartford, Conn.) in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in education.

“I’m really excited about Lou joining our program,” Sauer said. “She has extensive experience as a high school coach and did a great job at Ohio State last year. I’m looking forward to having her work with our novice rowers.”

Virginia finished third in the team competition at the 1998 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers’ second varsity eight won the national championship in that competition.
