CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia women’s rowing head coach Kevin Sauer has announced the signing of eight high school athletes to letters of intent with Virginia. The eight athletes are Barb Sheehan of St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada; Carrie Huttenlocher, Madeline Engel and Lauren Mitterer from Seattle, Wash.; Sarah Brennan from St. Louis, Mo.; Hayley Nunn and Heather Lloyd from Portland, Ore.; and Heather Sullivan from Fairfax, Va.
Sheehan, Huttenlocher and Brennan each earned bronze medals at the 1997 Junior World Rowing Championships. Engel, Huttenlocher and Mitterer rowed on a boat that won a high school national championship, while Nunn and Lloyd rowed on a boat that placed third at the high school national championships.
“I think this may be the best recruiting class in the country,” Sauer said. “I am very excited about them coming to the University of Virginia.”
Virginia finished third in the team competition at the 1998 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers’ second varsity eight won the national championship in that competition.
