CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia assistant women’s rowing coach Ashlee Patten coached the United States’ lightweight women’s quadruple skull to a second place finish earlier this month at the World Rowing Championships in Cologne, Germany.

The boat representing the United States lost to the German boat by 1.9 seconds. The Germans were the defending world champions in the event. The United States finished sixth in the event in 1997.

Patten was an assistant coach with the United States Women’s National Team and was given the responsibility of coaching the lightweight women’s quadruple skull.

She was also an assistant coach with the national team in 1995 and 1996. In 1996 Patten coached the lightweight women’s four to a bronze medal at the World Rowing Championships in Strathclyde, Scotland. In 1995, she served as an assistant coach for three non-Olympic events, all of which won gold medals at the World Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Patten is in her second year as an assistant coach in the Virginia program. A native of Flintstone, Ga., she earned an A.B. in history and American studies from Princeton University in 1990. While at Princeton, she won a lightweight national championship in 1988 and was captain of the 1990 squad which compiled an undefeated season and won a national championship.
