Rowing Fares Well at Head of the Charles

BOSTON – The University of Virginia’s lightweight four won by 13 seconds over the Minnesota Boat Club to highlight a strong showing by the UVa women’s rowing team at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday (Oct. 18). Virginia won the event with a time of 18:59.05 and the Minnesota Boat Club finished with a time of 19:12.66. Club Espana from Mexico (19:49.80) finished third in the lightweight four competition which included 17 boats.

Virginia finished fourth in the championship eight competition. The Cavaliers were the top collegiate crew in the competition with a time of 16:23.33 and finished behind three national teams. The Danish National Team won the event with a time of 15:44.66 followed by the Canadian National Team (15:50.48) and the United States National Team (15:58.28). Michigan finished fifth (16:27.87) and Brown was seventh (16:34.81).

UVa’s championship four finished second in that event to Brock University of Ontario, Canada. Brock University had a time of 18:38.67 and the Cavaliers finished with a time of 18:42.78. Brown finished third with a time of 18:49.04.

Virginia’s youth eight finished seventh in that competition which was won by St. Catharines Rowing Club of Ontario, Canada. St. Catharines finished with a time of 17:36.48 and UVa’s time was 18:00.99.

“It was a banner day for Virginia rowing,” said head coach Kevin Sauer. “The Head of the Charles Regatta is big and we did an incredible job. To be the top college crew in the championship eight and only be defeated by three national teams was an awesome effort by our crew.”
