CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team opens the spring portion of its 1998-99 schedule this weekend (March 27-28) at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif. The preliminary competition is scheduled for Saturday (March 27) with the finals on Sunday (March 28).
Virginia’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, lightweight eight and novice eight crews are all scheduled to compete in this weekend’s regatta.
“This is probably the most competitive race this spring aside from the NCAA Championships,” UVa women’s head rowing coach Kevin Sauer said. “Six of the top ten ranked varsity eights in the nation are scheduled to compete this weekend, including the top three.”
The University of Washington currently has the top-rated varsity eight followed by Virginia and the University of Michigan. Other varsity eights currently ranked in the top 10 scheduled to participate in the San Diego Crew Classic are Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Southern California.
Virginia’s varsity eight is comprised of senior coxswain Kara McPhillips (Maple Glen, Pa.), freshman stroke Barbra Sheehan (St. Catharine’s, Ontario), senior Ellen Perry (Beaverton, Ore.), senior Andrea Saathoff (Indialantic, Fla.), freshman Carrie Huttenlocher (Mercer Island, Wash.), junior Michelle Giller (Princeton, N.J.), senior Cinda Ewton (Manlius, N.Y.), junior Sara Garrett (San Clemente, Calif.) and junior Christina Hillson (Philadelphia, Pa.). Garrett finished fifth in the collegiate finals of the World Indoor Rowing Championships on February 21 in Boston, Mass. Saathoff was seventh in that competition, Sheehan was eighth, Huttenlocher ninth and Giller finished 13th.
The members of UVa’s second varsity eight are senior coxswain Sarah Harrick (Arlington, Va.), senior stroke Charlotte Quesada (South Freeport, Maine), junior Emily Egge (Alexandria, Va.), senior Ang McCallum (Charlottesville, Va.), sophomore Blythe Daly (Catonsville, Md.), junior Lauren Brown (West Friendship, Md.), junior Jennifer Herberger (Mitchellville, Md.), senior Charlotte Kraenzle (Annandale, Va.) and junior Lynette Sobehart (Allison Park, Pa.).
Virginia’s lightweight eight is comprised of junior coxswain Erica Hamant (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior stroke Anne Williams (St. Louis, Mo.), senior Nicole Younts (Springfield, Va.), senior Aimee Savard (Wolfeboro, N.H.), sophomore Rebecca Van Dyke (Lynchburg, Va.), senior Amy Johnson (Fairfax, Va.), sophomore Jennifer Blomberg (Watertown, Conn.), sophomore Kristen Keller (Charlottesville, Va.) and junior Helen Hill (Boulder, Co.). Younts finished seventh in the lightweight collegiate finals at the World Indoor Rowing Championships and Hill was tenth.
The members of UVa’s novice eight are freshmen Sarah Brennan (coxswain, St. Louis, Mo.), Madeline Engel (stroke, Mercer Island, Wash.), Hayley Nunn (Portland, Ore.), Megan Van Dam (Washington, D.C.), Lauren Mitterer (Kirkland, Wash.), Heather Sullivan (McLean, Va.), Lexye Street (Alexandria, Va.), Kate Shannon (Lake Oswego, Wash.) and Suzanne Groves (Savannah, Ga.).
Virginia’s men’s club rowing team is expected to compete in the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the novice eight at the San Diego Crew Classic.
