UVA Finishes Second in Three Races at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team opened its spring season with three second places finishes and a third place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday (March 28).

Virginia finished second to Washington in both the varsity eight and the second varsity eight, and the Cavaliers finished second to Villanova in the lightweight eight. Washington has won the team championship at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships the last two years.

Washington won the varsity eight with a time of 7:01.0 and UVa was second at 7:02.5. California-Berkeley finished third at 7:08.8 followed by Southern California (7:09.8), Michigan (7:10.8) and Wisconsin (7:27.8). Washington has won the varsity eight competition at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships the last two years.

Washington won the second varsity eight with a time of 7:19.5 and Virginia was second at 7:25.8. Southern California finished third with a time of 7:35.4 followed by Wisconsin (7:35.5), Washington State (7:36.1) and Iowa (7:46.8).

Villanova won the lightweight eight with a time of 7:33.0 and Virginia was second at 7:36.0. Wisconsin finished third at 7:42.4 followed by California-Davis (7:53.3), Humboldt State (8:03.4) and San Diego (8:07.1). Villanova won the lightweight varsity eight at last year’s NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.

Virginia finished third in the novice eight. Washington won the novice eight with a time of 7:24.8 and California-Berkeley finished second at 7:40.5. Virginia finished third with a time of 7:45.0 followed by Washington State (7:47.0), California-Davis (7:53), Texas (7:54) and Oregon State (8:00).

“We had a pretty good day against very good competition,” Virginia women’s head rowing coach Kevin Sauer said. “Washington was won the team national championship and the varsity eight national championship the last two years. Washington’s varsity eight came into this competition ranked number one and our varsity eight was ranked second. Today’s results won’t change those rankings.

“This is a good start to our spring season. We’re in the hunt.”

Virginia competes against Ohio State and Michigan at Ohio State on Saturday (April 3).
