CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The University of Virginia women’s varsity eight and lightweight eight are both ranked in the first 1999 regular-season national collegiate coaches Top 20 polls conducted by USRowing. The varsity eight is ranked second in the nation and the lightweight eight is ranked third.
In the varsity eight rankings, Washington is ranked first followed by Virginia, Brown, California-Berkeley and Southern California. Washington won the varsity eight competition at last weekend’s (March 27-28) San Diego Crew Classic with a time of 7:01.0. Virginia was second (7:02.5), California-Berkeley finished third (7:08.8), Southern California was fourth (7:09.8) and Michigan was fifth (7:10.8).
Virginia’s varsity eight is comprised of senior coxswain Kara McPhillips (Maple Glen, Pa.), freshman stroke Barbra Sheehan (St. Catharine’s, Ontario), senior Ellen Perry (Beaverton, Ore.), senior Andrea Saathoff (Indialantic, Fla.), freshman Carrie Huttenlocher (Mercer Island, Wash.), junior Michelle Giller (Princeton, N.J.), senior Cinda Ewton (Manlius, N.Y.), junior Sara Garrett (San Clemente, Calif.) and junior Christina Hillson (Philadelphia, Pa.).
In the lightweight eight rankings, Princeton is ranked first followed by Villanova, Virginia, Wisconsin and Radcliffe. Villanova won the lightweight eight competition at the San Diego Crew Classic (7:33.0) and Virginia was second (7:36.0).
Members of Virginia’s lightweight eight include junior coxswain Erica Hamant (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior stroke Anne Williams (St. Louis, Mo.), senior Nicole Younts (Springfield, Va.), senior Aimee Savard (Wolfeboro, N.H.), sophomore Rebecca Van Dyke (Lynchburg, Va.), senior Amy Johnson (Fairfax, Va.), sophomore Jennifer Blomberg (Watertown, Conn.), sophomore Kristen Keller (Charlottesville, Va.) and junior Helen Hill (Boulder, Co.).
