Virginia Sweeps Double-Dual Competition at Lake Monticello

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won every race it competed in on Saturday (April 17) as the Cavaliers defeated Michigan State and the University of California-Berkeley in a double-dual competition at Lake Monticello. Virginia was also victorious in races against the United States Naval Academy and the Radcliffe lightweight eight.

Despite extremely strong winds, Virginia won the second varsity four, the varsity four, the second novice eight, the novice eight and the second varsity eight races. Additionaly, the Cavaliers won the lightweight eight and varsity eight races. The Virginia women’s varsity eight is currently ranked second in the nation, while California and Michigan State are ranked fourth and 16th, respectively. Virginia’s lightweight eight ranks third in the country and Radcliffe is ranked fifth.

“We won every race we competed in today,” remarked UVa head coach Kevin Sauer. “This was important because two of these teams, California and Michigan State, were NCAA qualifiers last year. We had a very successful day.”

In the varsity eight races, Virginia defeated Michigan State with a time of 6:29.1 to 6:32.6, and the Cavaliers beat California-Berkeley 6:30.3 to 6:34.7. In the lightweight eight competition, Virginia defeated Radcliffe 6:46.4 to 6:47.0.

Virginia competes against Princeton, George Washington and Georgetown in Princeton, N.J., on May 1.
