COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won every race it competed in on Saturday (April 3) as the Cavaliers defeated the University of Michigan and Ohio State University in a double dual competition at Griggs Reservoir.
Virginia won the second varsity four, the varsity four, the second novice eight, the first novice eight, the second varsity eight and the varsity eight races. UVa’s varsity eight is ranked second in the nation, while Michigan is ranked sixth and Ohio State 14th.
“We won all of the races by open water,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “It was a very, very impressive day. It was a great day after the long trip to San Diego last week and the bus ride up here. Everyone responded really, really well.”
In the second novice eight competition, Virginia defeated Michigan 7:41:20 to 8:13.65, and the Cavaliers defeated Ohio State 7:54.82 to 8:01.60.
In the first novice eight competition, UVa defeated Michigan 7:20.03 to 7:44.23, and UVa defeated Ohio State 6:51.90 to 7:13.22.
In the second varsity four, Virginia defeated Michigan 8:32.00 to 9:13.50.
In the varsity four competition, Virginia won the morning race with a time of 8:08.20 followed by Michigan (8:13.50) and Ohio State (8:19.41). In the afternoon race in the varsity four, the Cavaliers won with a time of 7:59.20 followed by Ohio State (8:04.87) and Michigan (8:12.24).
In the second varsity eight, UVa defeated Michigan 7:21.60 to 7:25.24, and the Cavaliers beat Ohio State 6:47.10 to 7:02.15.
In the varsity eight competition, Virginia defeated Michigan 7:11.50 to 7:15.38, and the Cavaliers defeated Ohio State 6:42.50 to 6:52.31.
Virginia’s next competition is at the George Washington Invitational on Saturday (April 10).
