CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team opened its 1999 seasonwith a 3-0 (15-10, 15-8, 15-10) victory over Virginia Tech at UniversityHall tonight before 333 spectators. University Hall is serving as theWahoos home court for the first time since the inception of the UVavolleyball program in 1979. Virginia had played its home matches inMemorial Gym.
Fourth-year middle blocker and 1998 All-ACC First Team pick JessicaParsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) led the ‘Hoos with 10 kills whilehitting a match-high .391. She also added two service aces and a pair ofblocks. Third-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara,Calif./Santa Barbara) added eight kills and a match-high four service acesfor Virginia. Fourth-year setter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./XavierCollege Prep), UVa’s all-time assist leader, notched 25 assists, 10 digsand three service aces.
Virginia Tech was led by junior outside hitter Kristin Wright whoposted 10 kills. Senior setter Britton Julian recorded 18 assists for theHokies.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, September 3, when its hosts theJefferson Cup Tournament in University Hall. The Cavaliers will play OhioUniversity at 7:00 p.m. The tournament begins at 5:00 p.m. with Furmanplaying Alabama. The tournament concludes on Saturday, September 4, withfour matches. UVa will play Furman at 12 noon and then Alabama at 7:00p.m. Saturday’s action starts at 10:00 a.m. with Alabama playing Ohio,while the 5:00 p.m. match features Ohio and Furman.
