Cavaliers Drop Michigan 3-2 In OT

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The University of Virginia field hockey team won itshome opener today against Michigan (3-2) much like it won the first game ofthe 1999 campaign–in overtime. Virginia’s Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield,N.J./West Essex) blocked in a pass from USA Team member Jessica Coleman(Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) with 4:28 passed in overtime to send theCavaliers to their third consecutive win. Coleman, who scored both of theCavaliers’ goals in regulation, was a part of all three goals for Virginiatoday.

Virginia opened the scoring 3:40 into the contest with what provedto be foreshadowing as Coleman blocked in a pass from Vizzuso in much thesame way these two would hook up later. Vizzuso took a through ball to theendline and sent the ball across the mouth of the cage and Coleman knockedit in for the early lead.

But Michigan answered with a goal 7 minutes later as the Wolverinesconverted one of their five first half corners. Kelli Gannon knocked in theball with assists from Courtney Reid and Catherine Foreman to tie the gamefor the visitors.

The Wolverines went ahead on another corner play 13 minutes intothe second half. Reid was the goal scorer for Michigan this time with anassist from Gannon, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. It was the first timethis season that the Cavaliers have been behind in a match.

The Cavaliers tied the game with their own corner conversion withjust 2:32 to play. Coleman was the scorer with an assist from CarrieGoodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Laura Lindsay (Deerfield,Mass./Deerfield Academy). The teams ended regulation tied at 2-2.

In the overtime period, Coleman took the ball down to the rightside of the goal on the endline and sent a ball across the mouth of thecage where Vizzuso sent it into the net, giving the Cavaliers the victory.

Virginia’s goalie Becky Worthington (Fairview Village,Pa./Methacton)played the entire 75 minutes and registered 8 saves. The Cavaliers will face Towson on Sunday, September 12 at 1:00.
