PERTH, Australia — Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa./W. C.Henderson/Duke) scored twice and the vaunted USA defense held strong in thefinal 15 minutes of play as the Americans came from behind to defeat theEnglish squad 11-10 in the final game of round robin play at the IFWLAUnder-19 Smarter than Smoking World Championships. For the secondconsecutive game, Gallagher was named the Player of the Match.
England jumped off to a fast start and led 7-0 before the Americanswere able to get on the board with 6:35 to play in the first half. KelseyTwist (Cockeysville, Md./Roland Park Country) scored to end the Americandrought, and the USA scored twice more in the first half. But the Englishled 8-3 as the period came to a close.
For the first time in the tournament, the USA was down at halftime.But in the second period, the Americans were able to control the draw andconvert their chances. Said head coach Wendy Kridel, “The game began in atorrential downpour that lasted about 10 minutes with winds about 25 mphrolling though the stadium. We were down 7-0 in the first half, halftimescore was 8-3 them!The middle of the second half we were able to get the draw and penetratethe middle.”
Captain Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep/Universityof Virginia) scored only one goal in the game, but her tally at 4:16 tiedthe game, and then with just 2:50 to play, Katie Coyne (Baltimore, Md./BrynMawr School) scored her second goal for what would prove to be thegame-winner.
The USA defense came alive halfway through the second period andshut down the English for the final 14:50 of the game.
The United States will look to capture the gold medal as they takeon the host Australians tomorrow at 2:00. The Americans finished roundrobin play at 6-0, while the Australians finished in second at 5-1. TheStars and Stripes beat the Australians 7-4 in pool play. The USA lost toAustralia in 1995, the first Under-19 World Championships, held inPennsylvania.
