WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Fourth-year middle blocker Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks,Ill./Libertyville)totaled 20 kills, a career-high 27 digs and seven blocksto lead Virginia to a come-from-behind 3-2 (15-10, 8-15, 14-16, 15-12,17-15) victory over Rice as UVa won the Hi-IQ Classic Tournament title inWilliamsburg, Va., Saturday evening. For her efforts during thetournament, Parsons was named the Hi-IQ Classic Most Valuable Player. Withthe win, Virginia improves to 7-0 on the season, while Rice falls to 5-3.
After winning the first game, 15-10, the Cavaliers lost the next two tofall behind 2-1. The ‘Hoos rallied with a 15-12 triumph in the fourth gameand then took an exciting 17-15 victory in game five to win the match andseal the tournament title.
In addition to Parsons’ MVP performance, Virginia fourth-year setter MaryFrances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and third-year middleblocker Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) werenamed to the Hi-IQ All-Tournament Team. Against Rice, Scott totaled amatch-high 79 assists to go along with 13 digs and six block assists.Zwarich totaled 15 kills, 12 digs and five block assists. Third-yearoutside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) also had animpressive performance against the Owls with 21 kills and 23 digs.Second-year middle blocker Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem)registered career-highs of 12 kills and 10 blocks, while third-year outsidehitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) added 14 killsand nine digs.
Rice was led by Klara Zelinka and Kelly Smith who both totaled a match-high31 kills. Smith added 24 digs, while Zelinka added 15 and three serviceaces.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, September 14, when it travels toWashington, D.C., for a 7:00 p.m. match against Georgetown.
