Men’s Soccer Drops ACC Opener To Maryland, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamdropped its ACC opener to the Maryland Terrapins by the score of 1-0 infront of 2,034 spectators at Ludwig Field. Maryland freshman Scott Buetescored the only goal of the night at 49:38 to give Maryland its first homewin over Virginia since 1977.

After the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie after one half of play,Maryland jumped on the scoreboard early in the second half by scoring theeventual game-winning goal in the 49th minute of play when Jason Cropleyserved the ball from the right side of the field to teammate A.J. Herreraon the opposite sideline. Herrera then found Buete in front of the goalwhere he received the pass and booted it past Virginia goalkeeper KyleSinger (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) for the lone Maryland score.It would be all the Terrapins would need as they played solid defense andheld on for a 1-0 decision.

Virginia had several chances to tie things up as the clockticked-away over the final five minutes of play, but the Maryland defense,lead by goalkeeper Christian Lewis, would not allow the win to slip away.Lewis had five saves on the night, and recorded his second shutout of theseason with the 1-0 victory. Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) led UVawith three shots on goal, while teammates Ryan Gibbs (West Chester,Pa./East), Eric Solomon (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and Ryan Trout(Media, Pa. Strath Haven) each recorded two shots on goal for theCavaliers.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in theACC. Maryland improves to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference with the win.The Cavaliers will return to home action on Wednesday, September 15 whenUVa hosts Mount St. Mary’s. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.and will be played at Klockner Stadium.
