WASHINGTON, D.C. – Georgetown University defeated Virginia 3-2 (16-14, 8-15, 15-6, 11-15, 15-10) in women’s collegiate volleyball action tonight at McDonough Arena. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ seven-match winning streak as they fall to 7-1 on the season. The Hoyas improve to 8-1.
Trailing two games to one and behind 5-0 in the fourth game, Virginia stormed back to knot the contest at 2-2 by taking the fourth game 15-11. The ?Hoos took a 3-2 lead in game five, but Georgetown rattled off four-straight points to grab the lead for good. The Hoyas eventually won the deciding fifth game 15-10.
Third-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led Virginia with 20 kills and 11 digs. Third-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) added 15 kills. Third-year middle blocker Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission) and fourth-year middle blocker Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) both contributed 11 kills, while fourth-year setter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) dished out 59 assists and tallied 13 digs.
Kiran Gill led Georgetown with 18 kills and 13 digs, while Lauren Warner added 14 kills.
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, September 17, when they play Connecticut at 5:00 p.m. in the Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C.
