Women’s Soccer Stops N.C. State With Strong Second Half

Raleigh, N.C. – The Cavaliers went two-for-two on Tobacco Road thisweekend with a 3-1 defeat of N. C. State today in Raleigh. Virginia scoredthe final three goals of the game to win their second ACC game of theseason and improve to 4-2.

After N. C. State’s Laura Scott put back a rebound in the 29thminute of play, Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) took a pass from AlyBenitez (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) and scored right in front of the cageto tie the game in the 33rd minute. The half ended with the teams knottedat 1-1.

Just 58 seconds into the second half Cavalier captain CarrynWeigand (Burke, Va./Paul VI) scored her first goal since 1995 as she headedin a Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) corner kick to putUVA up 2-1. The teams remained close in the second half despite theCavaliers having a 14-2 advantage in shots and 9-1 advantage in cornerkicks. But the Hoos converted a second corner kick in the 84th minute asKatie Tracy (Richmond, Va./James River) headed in a Kelly Worden (Spring,Tex./Klein) corner kick to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead.

Julie Harris (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) started in the net forthe Cavaliers and Megan Boehm (Columbia, Mo./Howard) came in with 21minutes to play to help preserve the win.

The Cavaliers host the Coca-Cola Classic this weekend, September 24and 26. #20 Richmond faces #7 Hartford at 5 pm on Friday while theCavaliers take on #22 Stanford at 7:00 pm. On Sunday the Spiders and theCardinal face off at 1:00 and the Cavaliers and the Hawks tangle at 3:00
