RALEIGH, N.C. — Virginia women’s tennis players won three of four singlesflights and one of the two doubles flights at the season-opening WolfpackInvitational at the NC State Tennis Complex today. In the two flights (one singles and one doubles) that Virginia did not win, it had players reach the finals. The three-day tournament started on Friday and includedplayers from N.C. State, Applachian State, Davidson, Georgia State, andUNC-Greensboro.
UVa second year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), first year HenrietteWilliams (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) and second year Christine Kim (McLean,Va./Bishop Ireton), won the Flight A, B and D Singles titles, respectively.Third year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and first year JenniferTuchband (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) teamed to win Flight B Doubles for theCavaliers.
O’Donnell won the Flight A Singles title by defeating MarissaGildemeister of N.C. State 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the finals Sunday afternoon.The Flight B Singles final was an all-Virginia affair as Williams defeatedthird year player Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) 7-6(7-2), 7-5.
In Flight D Singles, Kim beat Katrina Gildemeister of N.C. State 6-2, 6-3for the title. Second year Jana Liskovcova (South Easton, Mass./Mansfield)finished in sixth place in Flight D after falling to Georgia State’s KarineEtienne 6-1, 6-1.
Tuchband lost to N.C. State’s Kristen Nicholls in the Flight C Singlesfinal 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Weaver captured fifth place in Flight C by handing a4-6, 6-2, 6-1 setback to Myrna Bawono of N.C. State.
In doubles competition, Weaver and Tuchband earned the Flight B Doublestitle with an 8-5 victory over N.C. State’s Bawono and Francie Barragan.UVa’s Williams and Liskovcova won the third-place match over the GeorgiaState duo of Ramsey Roberts and Etienne.
The Virginia tandems of Cook and Schweer, and Kim and O’Donnell took secondand fourth place, respectively, in Flight A Doubles. Cook and third yearChristie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) lost to N.C. State’s Marissa andKatrina Gildemeister 8-2 in the finals. Kim and O’Donnell fell toUNC-Greensboro’s Jenny Gonzalez and Audrey Legay 8-6 in the third placeFlight A Doubles match.
