SYDNEY, Australia – Cavalier All-American Michelle Vizzuso(Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) scored the game-winning goal to help the USAnational field hockey team defeat 1992 Olympic Champion Spain 3-2 in theOlympic Test Event.
The United States, who won the silver medal last month in the 1999Pan Am Games, won the first game of the tournament, which is designed totest preparations for the 2000 Olympic Games. The USA’s Jill Reeve scored apair of goals in the first half to stake the Americans to a 2-0 lead at thebreak.
Spain moved within one with a goal in the 9th minute of the secondhalf, but Vizzuso scored with 14 minutes remaining to push the margin backto two at 3-1. Spain scored a final goal late in the game, but the USA heldon for the win.
