Volleyball Takes Sixth Straight Win Over N.C. State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Third-year middle hitter Deanna Zwarich (OverlandPark, Kan./Shawnee Mission) notched a career-high 24 kills to lead theUniversity of Virginia to a 3-1 (15-4, 15-6, 12-15, 15-12) victory overNorth Carolina State in ACC volleyball action Saturday night at UniversityHall. The win was the Cavaliers’ sixth straight over N.C. State, and alsosnapped a four-match losing streak. UVa now stands at 8-4 overall and 1-1in the ACC. The Wolfpack falls to 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Zwarich hit a sizzling .537 (24 kills, 2 errors, 41 attempts) in thecontest en route to the 24 kills. Her 24 kills establish a new careerhigh, surpassing the 22 kills she totaled against Alabama on September 4.Zwarich also added seven blocks and six digs in the victory. Fourth-yearsetter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) dished out amatch-high 48 assists, and in the process moved into fifth place on theall-time ACC list with 5, 089. Scott also notched five of UVa’s 26 blockassists.

With 15 kills, fourth-year middle blocker Jessica Parsons (GreenOaks, Ill./Libertyville) moved into fourth place on Virginia’s all-timekills list with 1,064. Parsons contributed nine digs and seven blockassists to the winning effort as well. Fourth-year outside hitter WhitneyBilger (La Jolla, Calif./The Bishops School) notched 12 kills to round outthe ‘Hoos in double figures in kills. Third-year outside hitter KatieJones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led UVa in digs with 14.

Sophomore middle hitter Alison Kreager led N.C. State with 14 kills, whilejunior outside hitter Lisa Liberi led the team in digs with 14. Sophomoresetter Erin Vesey dished out 48 set assists for the Wolfpack.

Virginia won the first game, hitting an impressive .600 (12 kills, 0errors, 20 attempts), en route to the 15-4 victory. The Cavalierscontinued their hot hitting in winning the second game 15-6. UVa hit .344in the second game (14 kills, 3 errors, 32 assists). N.C. State regroupedto take the third game 15-12. Virginia fell behind in the fourth game 9-8,but came back to take the lead for good 11-10 on block assists by Jones andParsons. The ‘Hoos went on to close out the match with a 15-12 victory ingame four.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, September 28, when it travels toCollege Park, Md., for a 7:00 p.m. match against Maryland.
