CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers’ captain Carryn Weigand (Burke,Va./Paul VI) headed in a Meredith Rhodes (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church)corner kick in the 55th minute to give Virginia a 2-0 lead that stood up asthe Cavaliers upset the #7 Hartford Hawks 2-1. The Cavaliers went 2-0 onthe weekend to claim the 1999 Coca-Cola Classic.
UVA’s Lindsay Grubbs (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Corona Del Mar) gavethe Cavaliers the lead they would not relinquish in the 32nd minute as sheheaded in a beautiful cross from tournament MVP Angela Hucles (Norfolk,Va./Norfolk Academy). Hucles took a pass from Breanne Smith (Rochester,N.Y./Penfield) at the right corner of the penalty box and served the ballacross the mouth of the goal where Grubbs headed it in on the left post.
Virginia went up 2-0 on another header as Weigand outjumped herdefender and slammed the ball into the net in the 55th minute off Rhodes’corner kick.
Hartford got on the board as Tori Munro collected a ball atmidfield and ran it into the box where she swung the ball into the upperright corner of the cage in the 81st minute. But the Cavalier defense hungstrong and preserved the upset as Megan Boehm (Columbia, Mo./Howard)stuffed a short ball by Munro in the closing seconds.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 6-2 and have won fiveconsecutive games, including wins over two teams in the top-10. They returnto action at home against ACC-rival Maryland on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7:30.
In the first game of the tournament today, #23 Stanford defeated#11 Richmond 8-1.
