WILLAMSBURG, Va. — Cavalier captain Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) slammed in a Jess Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./ShoreRegional) pass with 3:37 gone in the second overtime period to lift the #8Cavaliers to a 3-2 victory over William & Mary. It was Coleman’s secondassist on the night and with her early goal she had a hand in each of theVirginia scores on the evening.
Virginia jumped out on top at the 21:42 mark as Coleman stole theball at the top of the circle and sent it into the corner of the cage togive the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. The Tribe tied the game with 11 minutes toplay in the half as Cat McCallum scored off a takeaway in the Tribe’soffensive end. Jamie Bolan fed McCallum who was just inside the circle.
The Cavaliers moved ahead for a second time as Coleman fed MeredithElwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) on a penalty corner play with 7:40 toplay in the first half.
William and Mary tied the score with 14:21 to play in the secondhalf as Ann Ekberg converted a second rebound off a corner shot. The teamsremained knotted for the rest of regulation.
For the second consecutive game Virginia played an overtime period,and in the first extra stanza the Cavaliers took six shots but were unableto put any past Tribe keeper Erika Vargas, who recorded three saves in thefirst overtime session. Virginia also had three corners in that first extrasession, but were unable to convert any of them. The Tribe didcounterattack twice off corners, and in both cases starting keeper BeckyWorthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) stopped the offensive threat.
In the second overtime period, the Cavaliers had a corner but sentthe ball out the endline. On the ensuing 16-yard hit, Coleman blocked upthe ball and dribbled it down field and sent it to a waiting Lindsay, whodeposited it in the net, giving the Cavaliers the win.
Virginia will travel to College Park, Md. to face the third-rankedTerrapins on Saturday, Oct. 2. Game time is 1:00 pm. Virginia defeatedMaryland in College Park last year 5-1 in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
