TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Virginia volleyball team spottedFlorida State a 2-0 lead before rallying by winning three-straight gamesfor a come-from-behind 3-2 (9-15, 11-15, 16-14, 15-12, 15-10) victory atTully Gym this afternoon. The Cavaliers improve to 10-4 overall and 3-1 inthe ACC with their third-consecutive win. The Seminoles fall to 5-10overall and 0-4 in the conference.
After dropping the first game 9-15, Virginia jumped out to a 9-3 lead ingame two, but Florida State used a 12-2 run for a 15-11 victory. The ‘Hoosfinally got on the scoreboard with a 16-14 triumph in game three. TheSeminoles led 14-13, but UVa registered the final three points for the win.Virginia trailed 7-0 in the fourth game, but rallied to close the gap to7-5. The Cavaliers finally took the lead at 12-11 and went on to a 15-12win. In game five, Virginia got off to a quick start and never trailed intheir decisive 15-10 win.
Fourth-year middle blocker and 1998 First Team All-ACC selection JessicaParsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) led the ‘Hoos with a career-high 30kills, just one shy of the school record for kills in a match. Her formercareer best was 27 kills against Georgetown on September 19, 1998. Parsonshit .375 (30 kills, 9 errors, 56 attempts), tied for the team lead in digswith 12 and added a pair of blocks in the match. Third-year middle hitterDeanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission) notched 20 kills andseven digs to go along with a match-high 10 blocks. Fourth-year setter MaryFrances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) recorded a match-high 75set assists (15.0 per game) and tied Parsons for team-high honors with 12digs. Scott posted five kills, three aces and two blocks as well.Third-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./SantaBarbara) was the third UVa player in double figure kills with 12 and shealso registered five block assists.
Norisha Campbell led Florida State with 20 kills and eight blocks, whileJennifer Werrick added 14 kills and a team-high 18 digs. Erica Bunchcontributed 16 kills and 13 digs for the Seminoles.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, October 8, when it travels to Durham,N.C., for a 7:30 p.m. match against Duke. The Cavaliers then take on WakeForest in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday, October 9, at 5:00 p.m.
