PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Virginia women’s tennis team hadthree players win two matches on Friday at advance to the semifinals of the1999 Brown Invitational. UVa second year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah,N.J./Mahwah), first year Jennifer Tuchband (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) andthird year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) each won two matches inFlights A, B and C, respectively, to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
In Flight A, O’Donnell, the fourth seed, defeated Heather Young of Brown4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round and then posted a 6-3, 6-4 win overDartmouth’s Alison Taff in the quarterfinals. Also in Flight A, third yearChristie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) lost to Boston University’sSelin Nassi in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Schweer went on to beat SetonHall’s Laura McCracken 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the consolationbracket.
Tuchband lost her first set to Sarita Yardi of Dartmouth 1-6, but came backto win the next two sets, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals ofFlight B. Tuchband defeated Harvard’s Fleur Broughton 6-2, 6-0 to moveinto the quarterfinals. Third year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./LakeWorth Christian), the number one seed in Flight B, opened the tournamentwith a 7-5, 6-0 win over Rebecca Rhee of Brown, but stumbled in thequarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) loss to Carrie Rose of Boston University.
Weaver advanced to the semifinals of Flight C with a pair of straight-setvictories. Weaver began the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Elizabeth Duganof Seton Hall and then defeated Dartmouth’s Carolyn Roth 6-3, 6-4 to moveinto the semis. Also in Flight C, second year Jana Liskovcova (SouthEaston, Mass./Mansfield) won her first round match over Boston College’sKim Arbuckle, 6-3, 6-2. Liskovcova fell to Olivia Garcia-McKean of Harvardin the quarterfinals 6-3, 7-6 (1). She will begin play in the consolationbracket on Saturday.
Two Virginia doubles teams also recorded first round victories on Friday.Cook and Schweer, the second seed in Flight A, received a victory whenBoston University’s Selin Nassi and Christine Cerretani defaulted. InFlight B Doubles competition, Tuchband and Weaver teamed to defeat Brown’sIrene Adsuar and Jeanine Baillie 8-4.
The 1999 Brown Invitational resumes tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
