Virginia Field Hockey Falls To North Carolina

Charlottesville, Va. – The Cavaliers and Tar Heels battled each otherand a steady rain in Charlottesville, and it was the Tar Heels who wereable to capitalize on their chances to defeat the Cavaliers 2-0 today.Kristen McCann tipped in UNC’s only penalty corner of the game at the 12:15mark of the second period for what would prove to be the eventualgame-winner.

After a scoreless first half, the teams battled for most of thesecond half before UNC was awarded a penalty corner with just over 12minutes to play. McCann tipped in Jana Toepel’s shot to put the Heels up1-0.

With 3:53 to play, Virginia’s Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./JohnBurroughs) was assessed a yellow card, which meant the Cavaliers had toplay down a player for the remainder of the game. On the restart, the Heelsworked a breakaway and McCann worked the ball to the endline and sent itacross the goalmouth where Holly Huff knocked it in with 3:40 to play togive the Tar Heels the insurance goal.

Virginia returns to action on Wednesday as they host theHighlanders of Radford. Game time is 7:00 pm.
