CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Third-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (SantaBarbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) recorded 13 kills en route to a .526 hittingpercentage to lead the University of Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0(19-17, 15-10, 15-12) victory over Duke on Saturday evening at UniversityHall. The win is the Cavaliers’ fourth straight over Duke and they haveswept the season series with the Blue Devils for the second-consecutiveyear. Virginia improves to 15-6 overall and 8-3 in the ACC with itsthird-straight victory. The Cavaliers conclude their five-match homestandwith a 4-1 record. With the loss, Duke falls to 9-11 overall and 3-7 inthe conference.
Fischer hit a team-high .526 in the match by nailing 13 kills with onlythree errors in 19 attempts. She also added two service aces and a pair ofblocks. Fourth-year setter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./XavierCollege Prep) notched a match-high 36 assists and also led the ‘Hoos witheight digs and three service aces. She hit .667 in the match by connectingon seven of nine kill attempts with only one error. Fourth-year middleblocker Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) tallied ninekills, while third-year middle blocker Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park,Kan./Shawnee Mission) and third-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood,Texas/Kingwood) added seven kills apiece. Jones also contributed threeservice aces.
Senior outside hitter Dominique Philipp led the Blue Devils with 11 killsand also added nine digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Harris totaledseven service aces, seven blocks, including four solo stops, and fivekills. Senior middle blocker Jami Ediger led Duke in digs with 13 andadded four block assists.
In game one, Virginia took a 3-1 lead, only to see the Blue Devils score 10of the next 13 points to take an 11-6 advantage. Duke stretched its leadto 14-7, but the ‘Hoos fought back to take a 15-14 lead on a service ace byZwarich. Fischer finally ended the first game, 19-17, with a service ace.In the second game, Virginia jumped out to a 7-3 edge, but the Blue Devilscame back to take a 10-8 lead. The Cavaliers rattled off the final sevenpoints of the game, including the last three via service aces by Scott, fora 15-10 win. In game three, UVa grabbed a 10-1 lead and led 14-3 beforeDuke mounted a comeback. Harris notched four of her match-high sevenservice aces to pull the Blue Devils within six, 14-8. Duke crept towithin 14-12 before Jones ended the match with her third service ace of theevening.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, October 29, when it travels toClemson, S.C., for a 7:00 p.m. match against 14th-ranked Clemson.
