ATLANTA – Junior middle blocker Teryl Townsend and sophomore outside hitterMaja Pachale combined for 49 kills, 25 digs, six blocks and four serviceaces to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team to a 3-1 (15-5, 16-14, 14-16,16-14) victory over Virginia Saturday night at Jervey Gym. With the win,the Yellow Jackets improve to 15-10 overall and 5-7 in the ACC and avenge a3-0 loss to the Cavaliers on October 15. UVa falls to 15-8 overall and 8-5in the conference.
Townsend posted a season-high total of 25 kills, while hitting .422 in thematch. She registered 12 digs, four service aces and three blocks inhelping lead Georgia Tech to the victory. Pachale connected on 24 killsand added 13 digs and three blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Kyleen Belltallied 10 kills and a team-high 18 digs, while junior setter CourtneyAdler dished out 58 set assists to go along with 17 digs.
Fourth-year middle blocker and 1998 first-team All-ACC selection JessicaParsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) led five Virginia players indouble figure kills with 20. She hit .326 (20 kills, 5 errors in 46attempts) in the match and also added 10 digs and five blocks. Senioroutside hitter Whitney Bilger (La Jolla, Calif./The Bishops School) notched13 kills and rounded out her double-double with 10 digs. Third-yearoutside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) registered amatch-high 23 digs and added 12 kills, while third-year middle blockerDeanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission) was the fourthCavalier to record a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Third-yearoutside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) addednine kills and both she and Zwarich had four blocks as well. Fourth-yearsetter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) handed out55 assists and also tallied nine digs.
The final three games of the match were decided by 16-14 scores, withGeorgia Tech winning the second and fourth games by that score. The ‘Hooswon the third game 16-14, while the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quickstart with a 15-5 win in game one.
Georgia Tech outhit Virginia .227 to .164, despite having just one morekill than Virginia (71 vs. 70). The Yellow Jackets also held an 83-67advantage in digs, while both squads registered 11 team blocks.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, November 5, for its regular seasonfinale against Maryland at 7:00 p.m. in University Hall.
