CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five members of the University of Virginia men’s tennis team were in action today (Wednesday, November 1) in the qualifying portion of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region II Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C.
In the singles draw, third-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) lost in the first round to Calin Milos from Old Dominion, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, while first-year Gregg Alpert (Englewood, Colo./ Cherry Creek) fell in the first round to Hampton University’s Glauco Nascimento.
The `Hoos’ three other singles representatives won first-round matches to advance to the second round of the qualifying bracket Thursday (November 2). Second-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) advanced by default. He will face Wake Forest’s David Loewenthal. Meanwhile, third-year Jonathan Chou (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) beat North Carolina A&T’s C.C. Davis, 6-1, 6-0, to set up a second-round meeting with Duke’s Alex Bose on Thursday morning. UVa’s final singles participant, fourth-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), also advanced to the second round, with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jonah Fliegelman. Hunter will play William and Mary’s Matt Davis in the second round.
In doubles, the Cavaliers experienced two first-round victories followed by two second-round defeats. Alpert and Romesberg defeated Hampton’s Nascimento and Ladislav Rezac, 9-7, before falling to Chris Erickson and Jody Strik from William & Mary, 8-2. Chou and Duquette also exited in the second round. The duo beat William & Mary’s Joe Brooks and Matt Davis, 8-4, but then lost to Fliegelman and Bence Hamori from AU, 8-5.
The ITA regional continues tomorrow, when the qualifying portion of the tournament will end and the doubles main draw will begin. Aside from the qualifying entrants, the Cavaliers also have one doubles team already in the main draw. Hunter and fourth-year Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) received an automatic bid and will compete in the doubles main draw Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, Hunter and fourth-year Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./ Chapel Hill) will play singles matches in the main draw on Friday (November 3). Montgomery is the tournament’s fifth seed.
