Zwarich Sets Virginia Single Season Kills Record In 3-2 Win Over Georgia Tech

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) smashed 22 kills and, in the process, established a new school record for kills in a single season in UVa’s come-from-behind 3-2 (10-15, 8-15, 15-2, 15-10, 15-12) victory over Georgia Tech Saturday night (November 4) at University Hall. With the win, the Cavaliers snap Georgia Tech’s 12-match winning streak and improve to 15-12 overall and 8-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Yellow Jackets drop to 21-5 overall and fall to second place in the ACC with an 11-2 record.

Zwarich shined on UVa’s Senior Night as she set the single season kills record with her 21st of the match which came in the fifth game and 499th of her stellar career. Anne Marie Hammers held the previous Virginia single season kills record with 498, set in 1991. Zwarich finished the match with 22 kills and now has 500 on the season. Zwarich is also second on Virginia’s career kills list with 1,453, just 12 shy of Greta Jansson’s (1988-91) school record mark of 1,465. In addition to the 22 kills, Zwarich also added 11 digs and six blocks.

Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) notched 13 kills and a match-high 17 digs for the Cavaliers, while first-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) knocked down a career-high 16 kills and hit .520 (16 kills, 3 errors on 25 attempts). First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) led the `Hoos in assists with 45.

Junior Enkeleida Mabry led Georgia Tech with 18 kills and 12 digs, while junior Ky Bell added 17 kills and 12 digs. Senior Teryl Townsend nearly recorded a triple-double for the Yellow Jackets with 11 kills, 13 digs and nine blocks.

In the deciding fifth game, UVa jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Georgia Tech came back to take an 8-7 advantage. The Cavaliers tied the match at 8-8 and it was tied three more times, including 12-12 before the `Hoos took the lead for good. UVa scored the next three points to seal the win, 15-12.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the match with 15-10 and 15-8 wins in the first two games. Zwarich sparked the comeback with eight kills and a .727 hitting percentage in a 15-2 UVa triumph in the third game. In the fourth game, Virginia jumped out to a 13-3 lead and withstood a Georgia Tech comeback that cut the lead to 13-10, before prevailing 15-10.

UVa returns to action on Friday, November 10 when it travels to Wake Forest for a 7:00 p.m. match.
