CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team is ranked 24th in The Associated Press 2000-01 preseason top 25 poll. The ranking is the first for the Cavaliers in The Associated Press poll since Virginia was ranked 25th on December 3, 1996.
UVa is ranked 25th in the USA Today/ESPN preseason ranking. Among the other publications that include the Cavaliers in their preseason rankings are The Sporting News (18th), Basketball News (23rd), Dick Vitale’s College Basketball 2000-2001 Preview (23rd), Street & Smith’s (24th) and Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook (27th).
There are 12 lettermen on the Virginia roster, including four returning starters from last year’s team. The Cavaliers compiled an overall record of 19-12 last season, tied for third in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 9-7 conference record and participated in the National Invitation Tournament.
The Cavaliers play the second and final exhibition game of their preseason practice period on Sunday (Nov. 12) at 1:00 p.m. against the Nantucket Nectars at University Hall.
