CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia Women’s Soccer team dominated UNC Greensboro from start to finish Saturday night (Nov. 11) en route to a 6-1 victory in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championships.

The Cavaliers got on the board in just the 10th minute of play when first-year Erin Engelhardt’s (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/ Immaculate Heart) shot was deflected in by a Spartan defender to give the `Hoos an early lead. Then, in the 34th minute, first-year Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton North) sent a ball across the face of the goal that was deflected by UNCG goalkeeper Angie Rudy. Engelhardt collected the deflection and deposited it into the back of the net to give Virginia a 2-0 halftime lead.

UVa, which outshot the Spartans, 29-4, scored its third goal of the game just seven minutes into the second stanza when Lane blasted home yet another goal off of Spartans goalkeeper Rudy’s deflection. Fourth-year Tracey Lache (Littleton, Colo./ Heritage) and third-year Ashley Meeker (Zanoni, Va./ Hampton Roads Academy) added second half goals for the Cavaliers, as did fourth-year Kyla Robinson (Arlington, Va./ H.B. Woodlawn), who scored her first-ever goal as a UVa player. The Spartans added a second-half goal of their own on a shot from Megan Bynum in the 89th minute.

Virginia will play the winner of a second round contest between North Carolina and Wake Forest at a location and time to be determined.
