LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 11th Annual Keydet Invitational at Washington and Lee’s Warner Center. The event was hosted by the Virginia Military Institute. Seven members of the Cavalier wrestling program competed in the invitational and were highlighted by first-year wrestler Ryan Stewart (Dumphries, Va./Potomac). Stewart finished 4-1 in the 125 lbs. class and defeated Duke’s Evan Beard by the score of 6-5 in a tie-break match to claim third place in the 125 consolation bracket.
Virginia first-year J.D. Patton (Richmond, Va./Woodberry Forest) turned in a 2-2 mark after gathering a pair of victories over teammate Andy DeMartino (5-1) and George Mason’s Preston Ailor (7-3). DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson), went 0-2 in the event.
UVa newcomers Scott Douglas (Lake Junaluska, N.C./Tuscola) and Reed Landry (McLean, Va./Potomac School) each went 1-2 after posting their first collegiate victories. Douglas gathered his first win as a Cavalier with a 4-0 win over Washington & Lee’s Josh Rogers and Landry posted a 10-6 victory over Longwood’s Ben Rogers.
James Savia (Bellmore, N.Y./Chaminade) and Ernesto Vera (Chesapeake, Va./Lake Taylor)finished 0-2 and 0-1, respectively.
Virginia will return to action on Saturday, November 18th when the Cavaliers compete in the Keystone Classic. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
