Five Cavaliers were named to the All-South Regional team, including Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) and Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, Va./West Essex), who were named to the first team. Joining them on the squads are Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Julia Richardson (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge), who were named to the second team.
Worthington is a three-time All-ACC Tournament selection (97, 99, 00) and a two-time All-South Region selection (99, 2nd team, 00, 1st team). She ranks sixth all-time at UVA with 311 saves and in 1997 led the nation in goals-against average (.919) as the Hoos advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the first time in school history. Her career goals-against average of 1.44 ranks 17th all-time in the Commonwealth and 7th all-time at Virginia. In the 2000 ACC Tournament semifinals Becky stopped an overtime stroke to preserve the tie in the game against top-seeded and second-ranked North Carolina, and in the ensuing strokeoff stopped four of Carolina’s nine strokes to help Virginia to the upset win.
Vizzuso, named to the All-ACC team in 1999, is a four-time All-South selection (97-2nd, 98-2nd, 99-1st, 00-1st). She ranks seventh all-time in scoring at Virginia with 38 goals and 20 assists. Her 38 goals ranks seventh all-time at UVA as well. Her nine career game-winning goals ranks 11th all-time at Virginia.
Coleman led the team in scoring for the second consecutive year, scoring 15 points and adding five assists. A 1999 third-team All-American, Coleman already ranks 8th all-time at Virginia with 91 career points (38g, 15a).
Goodloe led the team with 15 assists this season, the second consecutive year that she led in that catagory. Her 39 career assists ranks third at Virginia, and she has two seasons that rank in the top-10 all-time at Virginia in assists in a season (19, 1999, 15, 2000). This is her first such selection to a regional team.
Richardson is a repeat selection to the South Regional squads, having been named to the second team in 1999. A captain in 2000, Richardson led the Hoos with six defensive saves this season.
