UVa Men's And Women's Swimming Teams Win Cavalier Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won the 2000 Cavalier Invitational Saturday (December 2) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. Both teams won five events on Saturday and UVa’s two teams combined to win 32 of the 42 events contested in the three-day meet. The UVa men won the six-team meet with 1,434 points and won 15 of 21 events. The Cavalier women were equally as dominant as they tallied 1,046 points and won 17 of 21 events in their six-team invitational.
The Virginia men’s team score of 1,434 points nearly doubled Yale’s second place total of 730 points. West Virginia finished third with 556 points and West Chester was fourth with 495. William & Mary and Central Connecticut rounded out the men’s field with 261 and 203 points, respectively. On the women’s side, UVa won with 1,046 points while Yale was second with 752. West Chester earned third place with 614.50 points and West Virginia came in fourth with 596. William & Mary and Central Connecticut were fifth and sixth with 401.50 and 258 points, respectively.
Second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) paced the Virginia women’s team, which won five of six events on Saturday, with a pair of individual wins as well as a relay victory. Lane won the 1650 freestyle with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:15.92 and also took the 200 butterfly with a NCAA “B” time of 2:00.30. Lane anchored UVa’s winning 400 free relay team that clocked a time of 3:28.36 as well. Fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s), first-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) and third-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) also swam legs on the winning relay. Iffland also earned a victory in the 200 backstroke with a NCAA “B” time of 2:00.30. First-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) earned Virginia’s other win on the day as she turned in a time of 2:19.80 in winning the 200 breaststroke. In addition, Baly finished one tenth of a second behind Lane in the 1650 free with a time of 16:15.92 with her time also bettering the NCAA “A” qualifying standard. Dykehouse was second to Lane in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.67, which also bested the NCAA “B” standard.
The Virginia men won five of seven events on Saturday with first-years Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) and Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) winning individual as well as relay events. Anderson won the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.11 seconds, while Wagner won the 200 backstroke in 1:46.81. Wagner’s time bettered the NCAA “B” qualifying standard. Anderson and Wagner also swam the leadoff and anchor legs, respectively, on UVa’s winning 400 free relay team. Fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) and first-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) swam the middle two legs on the relay that posted a winning time of 3:02.07. The Cavaliers dominated the 1650 freestyle as they took the top five spots with second-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) leading the way with a winning time of 15:08.87. Fourth-year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was second (15:12.91), while Prichard was third (15:16.55). All three swimmers beat the NCAA “B” qualifying mark with DeMarco missing the “A” cut by less than two seconds. Fourth-year Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and second-year Mike Wheeler (Lisbon, Md./McDonogh) were fourth and fifth in the 1650 free with times of 15:30.79 and 15:1.62, respectively. First-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) rounded out the Cavaliers’ event winners as he earned the top spot in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.79.
The other women’s event winner on Saturday was Dominique Diezi, who won the 100 free in a time of 51.16 seconds. On the men’s side, Yale’s Josh Gallant won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 312.10 points which qualifying him for NCAA Zone Diving Regionals. Former Virginia standout and current volunteer assistant coach Doak Finch won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:46.77.
