PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Forward Schuye LaRue led a late second-half charge asNo. 24 Virginia erased a nine-point second-half deficit to beat St. Joseph’s62-58 on Wednesday night.
LaRue scored six straight points in the final 2:28 seconds to put Virginia(6-3) in front for good against a scrappy Hawks team. She finished with 26points and 15 rebounds in a dominating performance.
With St. Joseph’s ahead 56-55, LaRue took over the game. She scored on apair of free throws to give the Cavaliers a 57-56 lead and then drained abaseline jumper on the next possession. With 1:01 left in the game, LaRueswished a 15-foot jump shot to put Virginia ahead by five points.
St. Joseph’s had the ball in the final seconds trailing by three points, butAngela Zampella’s 3-point attempt was blocked by Telisha Quarles.
St. Joseph’s (3-4) overcame a terrible opening nine minutes. The Hawksmissed their first 12 shots and turned the ball over six times while Virginiavaulted out to a 10-0 lead.
But St. Joseph’s erased the deficit in less than two minutes and led 26-24at halftime. The Hawks, who upset Virginia in 1999, extended the lead to 43-34with 13:22 remaining in the game before Virginia came storming back.
Zampella had 21 points and six assists for St. Joseph’s.
