Cavaliers Fall to Gauchos 78-66

Despite a 20-rebound effort from Schuye LaRue (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll), the University of Virginia Cavaliers (8-4) fell to UC Santa Barbara 78-66 tonight in California. LaRue’s 20 boards tied the school record set by Lesley Berens in 1975 and equalled by Chrissy Reese in 1980–both previous efforts coming before LaRue was born. In addition, LaRue had 15 points en route to notching her seventh double-double of the season, one shy of her ACC-leading total last year.

After falling behind by as many as ten in the first half, the Cavaliers used a 26-14 run to take a two point lead, only to allow a 7-2 run by the Gauchos to end the half, giving UCSB a 42-39 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Gauchos again led by as many as eight before a 10-0 burst over a five minute period as LaRue had two points and two assists in the run, giving Virginia a 51-49 lead. The teams battled back and forth over t he next seven minutes with a 64-64 tie at the 3:17 mark, but the Gauchos orchestrated a 14-2 run to close out the game and get the win, with Jess Hansen scoring 10 of the points.

Telisha Quarles (Louisa, Va./Louisa County) led the Cavaliers with 17 points while Marcie Dickson (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) chipped in 10 points.

The Cavaliers travel down the Pacific Coast Highway to take on the Cal State-Northridge Matadors tomorrow, December 29, to close out their west coast swing.
