ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Virginia wrestling team dropped a 25-12 decision to Cornell in a dual match at the Newman Arena. The loss was UVa’s first in dual match action this season. Four Cavaliers won their respective weight classes, but it wasn’t enough as the Big Red captured six of the 10 bouts on the evening for the victory.
Virginia jumped out to a 9-0 lead with Joe Alexander leading the way with a 4-0 decision at 133 lbs. over Doug Jesse. The Cavaliers’ Bob Seidel then defeated Cornell’s Tom Waldron 4-2 at 141 lbs., followed by a 6-0 decision by UVa’s P.J. Bory over Gabe Webster at 149 lbs.
CU’s Leo Urbinelli then took charge at 157 lbs., taking a 4-1 lead in the first period with two takedowns over UVa’s Don Carlo-Clauss.? Carlo-Clauss scored on an escape in the second period, but an escape and a one-point penalty in the third gave Urbinelli a 6-2 advantage.? With 1:35 in riding time, Urbinelli captured the 7-2 decision for the Big Red’s first victory of the match.
Cornell’s Clint Wattenberg followed his teammate at 165 pounds with a 6-1 victory over UVa’s Gregory Francesca.? After two periods, it was tied at 1-1 before Wattenberg earned two? points on a takedown and three more on a near fall.
Cornell’s Jim Stanec was leading 12-2 over Virginia’s Kevin Collier at 174, before putting Collier’s shoulders to the mat for a fall at 6:17.? The only pin of the match, it gave the Big Red the lead at 12-9.
The Cavaliers’ Jimi Massey evened it back up at 12-12 in the 184 lbs. bout with a 10-3 decision over Rich Desoto, but it was the last victory for UVa in the match.? Cornell’s Corey Anderson picked up six more points for the Big Red at 197 lbs. after his UVa opponent forfeited.
CU’s Sean Wing made it a 21-12 match with a 2-1 overtime decision in the heavyweight match.? In one of the more exciting matches of the night, UVa’s Josh Etu earned a point on an escape in the second and Wing made it 1-1 with an escape in the third, sending the match into overtime.? Wing had the option to start the overtime period on the bottom and took full advantage, with an escape, and the win, just seconds into the extra period.
The final match was the 125-pound bout between Cornell’s Alejandro Alvarez and Virginia’s Ryan Stewart, with Alvarez winning with a 15-4 major decision victory.? Alvarez scored three takedowns in the first period and two more in the second for a commanding 10-4 lead, with Stewart earning his points on escapes.? An escape and a takedown in the third sealed the 15-4 win for Alvarez and the 25-12 victory for the Big Red.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 2-1 overall in dual match action. The Cavaliers will now travel to Lock Haven, Pa. to face Lock Haven University in a dual match. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
