The University of Virginia Softball Clinic sessions have been planned to improve basic fundamental skills and knowledge of the game for players from 5th grade through 12th grade. Sessions will include Pitching and Catching, Fielding, Hitting, and Bunting. It is very important to attend AT LEAST TWO sessions of your particular area(s), as they will progress from basic to advanced skill levels. *Note* Pitching and Catching will be individually instructed.
**If possible, pitchers need to provide their own catchers for pitching instruction segment.**
Clinic Objective

Entries are limited to the first 40 participants per session.
Location
The clinic will be held at “The Cage,” located next to University Hall and Onesty Hall at the University of Virginia.
What to Bring:
Each Athlete must bring her own glove, tennis shoes, sweats, shorts, T-shirt, socks and batting gloves, if needed. Please bring your own bat, helmet, and catching gear. The Virginia Softball Program will only be able to provide a limited number of bats, helmets, and catching gear.
**We will not be providing overnight accommodations. If you will be needing such accommodations, please indicate with registration and we will send you a list of local hotels.**

INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF
Head Women’s Softball Coach Cheryl Sprangel
Cheryl Sprangel enters her fifth season at the helm of the University of Virginia Softball Program. In her first four seasons at UVa, she has guided the Cavaliers to a 147-109 record. In the 2001 season, Sprangel led Virginia to a school best 52-17 record on the season, while also earning her 600th career victory on April 17th, becoming the 27th Division I softball coach to record 600 or more career victories. Coach Sprangel was selected as the VaSID All-State Coach of the Year for her 2001 season. Before coming to Virginia, Sprangel was the Head Coach at the University of Toledo for 14 seasons. While at Toledo, Sprangel led the Rockets to three MAC conference titles and one Women’s College World Series Berth in 1989.
Assistant Softball Coach Cathy Johnson
This will be Cathy Johnson’s second season at Virginia. Previously, Johnson held the head coaching position at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Washington. A graduate of Western Washington University, Johnson helped lead the softball team to a NAIA National Championship in 1998. In the same year, she was named to the National Championship All-Tournament team, and was selected as Western Washington’s Female Athlete of the Year. During her collegiate career, Johnson served as a clinician at numerous softball camps in the Bellingham, Washington area. She also has experience coaching at Team USA softball camps. Johnson was the Head Coach of the Maddness Stars fastpitch summer travel team.
Second Assistant Coach Meg Young
Meg enters her first season coaching at Virginia after completing her four- year career as a UVA student athlete. Young concluded her career in 2001 with 13 school records as a four-year starting right fielder and the Cavaliers’ lead-off hitter. During her tenure, Meg was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team four times, as well as being named to the All-Region First Team, the VASID All-State Team, the All ACC Team, and was also an Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star selection.
