Chris Colbeck Named Nation's Outstanding Assistant Lacrosse Coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA-University of Virginia assistant men’s lacrossecoach Chris Colbeck has been named a co-recipient of the Jay Gallagher Award as the nation’soutstanding assistant lacrosse coach at the National LacrosseCoaches’ Convention last weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. He shares the honor with Syracuse’s Kevin Donahue.
Colbeck is entering his fifth year on head coach Dom Starsia’s staff.He serves as the offensive coordinator and is nationally recognizedas one of the brightest, most innovative offensive coaches in thegame today. Under his guidance, Virginia has led the NCAA in scoringin both 1997 and 1999 and is annually one of the most explosiveoffenses in the country. He has coached four first-team All-Americaattackmen, two ACC Players of the Year and one ACC Rookie of the Year.
A 1991 graduate of Loyola College in Baltimore, Colbeck earnedAll-America honors in 1990 and 1991 for the Greyhounds. He alsoreceived the Mohler Award as Loyola’s top male student-athlete andwas an honor roll student. He served as team captain as a junior andsenior and played in the North-South Classic in 1991.
“Jay Gallager was a friend of mine and a wonderful lacrosse coach andperson,” said Starsia. “He would be very proud of Chris’ selectionfor the award in his name. Chris is one of the truly outstandingyoung men in our field. These assistant coaches do not get nearlyenough credit for the support and effort they bring to our programs. Chris Colbeck is oneof the most honest and hard working individuals I have been around.During his four years with our program, we have claimed three ACCtitles and that elusive NCAA national championship. I have become abetter lacrosse coach for his influence.”
The Cavaliers open the 2001 campaign at home Feb. 24 against Towson.The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
