FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling took first place in the 2001 Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of George Mason University. The Cavaliers won the event after winning six of the ten weight class titles en route to gathering 112.50 points in the meet. UVa was one of seven schools competing in the meet. Virginia was joined by George Mason, James Madison, Longwood, Old Dominion, Virginia Military Institute and Newport News Apprentice School to round out the field of competing schools. George Mason took second place in the meet with 95 points, followed by James Madison (83 points) in third place.
Virginia’s Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice), P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy), Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) each won their respective weight classes for UVa. Foley (157 (lbs) and Painter (285 lbs.) each posted a 4-0 record, while MacDonald (133 lbs.), Bory (149 lbs.), Francesca (165 lbs.) and Freday (197 lbs.) finished 3-0 to claim their weight class titles. Bory was named the tournament’s “Most Oustanding Wrestler.”
Virginia’s Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) each turned in second places finishes. Etu went 3-1 in the 285 lbs. class, Muir finished 2-1 at 165 lbs. and Seidel turned in a 3-1 mark at 141 lbs. UVa’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) finished 3-1 at 157 lbs. to record a third place finish.
Virginia had six first place finishes, three second place finishes, one third place finish and three fourth place finishes overall in the meet.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, January 27th when Virginia hosts North Carolina State (1:00) and Duke (7:00) in Atlantic Coast Conference dual matches. Both matches will be held at Memorial Gymnasium.
