CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia, ranked 13th in the AP poll released January22 and 12th in the U S A T o d a y/ESPN poll releasedJanuary 21, stands at 13-3 overall and 2-3 in theAtlantic Coast Conference. In its last game, UVadefeated 20th-ranked Missouri 85-72 (Jan. 20) inCharlottesville, Va. North Carolina is ranked fifth inthe latest AP poll and sixth in the U S A T o d a y/ E S P Npoll. The Tar Heels stand at 15-2 overall and 5-0 inthe ACC. North Carolina is coming off an 80-70 winover Florida State (Jan. 20) in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Series vs. North Carolina
North Carolina leads the all-time series with the Cavaliers 113-42in a rivalry that dates back to the 1910-11 season. Virginia swept theregular season series from the Tar Heels last year, marking the firsttime that has happened since the 1980-81 season (UNC, however,won the meeting in the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four that year).
The Cavaliers won the first meeting of the 1999-2000 season 87-85 inCharlottesville (Jan. 18). The victory snapped UVa’s six-game losingstreak to UNC. UVa swept the season series with a 90-76 victory inChapel Hill (Feb. 20).
Virginia’s victory in Chapel Hill last season was its first ever triumphat the Smith Center. The Cavaliers lost their previous 14games in the Dean Dome. The win also snapped UVa’s 18-gamelosing streak in Chapel Hill. Prior to last season, the previous Virginiavictory in Chapel Hill came on February 3, 1981, when UVa posted an80-79 overtime victory.
Despite Virginia’s win last season, the Tar Heels have dominatedthe series in games played in Chapel Hill, winning 56 of the 60 meetings.Virginia’s wins in Chapel Hill occurred on: February 24, 1911 -UVa18, UNC 15, January 25, 1973 – UVa 84, UNC 78 (UNC rankedfifth), February 3, 1981 – UVa 80, UNC 79 (UNC ranked 11th) inovertime, and February 20, 2000 – UVa 90, UNC 76.North Carolina has won eight of the last 11 games and 18 of thelast 24 games between the two teams.
Ending Smith Center Drought
The Cavaliers will try to continue a new trend they started lastseason by winning in Chapel Hill tonight. Last season, Virginiadefeated UNC on its home court for the first time since an 80-79 overtimewin at Carmichael Auditorium on February 3, 1981. TheCavaliers are attempting to win back-to-back games against the TarHeels in Chapel Hill for the first time ever.
The Smith Center has not been a successful arena for theCavaliers as their 1-14 all-time record attests.Virginia has suffered from some scoring droughts in the SmithCenter through the years. The Cavaliers have scored fewer than 70
points in seven of their last 10 games in the Smith Center.The Cavaliers average 65.9 points per game against UNC at theSmith Center, while the Tar Heels average 79.0 vs. UVa.
