Virginia Wrestling Rallies to Beat Duke, 19-15

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team won its first Atlantic Coast Conference dual match of the season with a 19-15 come-from-behind victory over the Duke Blue Devils in UVa’s Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers won six of the ten bouts on the evening, including five of the final six matches.

Duke won three of the first four matches on the evening and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after Tommy Hoang posted a 9-3 victory over Virginia’s Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) at 125 lbs. and Sean Meakim defeated Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) by the score of 4-3 at 133 lbs.

The Cavaliers’ Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) posted a 6-3 decision over Harry Clarke at 141 lbs. to pull UVa to within three points of Duke at 6-3. The Blue Devils extended their lead to nine points (12-3) after Andre Solimon pinned Virginia’s Ernesto Vera (Chesapeake, Va./Lake Taylor) at 4:48 in the 149 lbs. class.

After Vera’s fall, the Cavaliers went on to win five of the final six matches of the dual, including four consecutive matches beginning with Don Carlo-Clauss’ (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) 4-2 victory over Josh Sheridan at 157 lbs. Carlo-Clauss’ win cut Duke’s lead to 12-6. The Cavaliers’ Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) topped Duke’s Tim Marcantonio by the score of 5-2 at 165 lbs. before Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) posted a 10-2 major decision victory over Frank Cornely at 174 lbs. to give Virginia its first lead of the dual at 13-12. Virginia’s Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) earned a 10-3 victory over Duke’s Tom Cass at 184 lbs. to extend UVa’s lead to 16-12.

The Blue Devils pulled within one team point of the Cavaliers at 16-15 when Daegan Smith topped UVa’s Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) by the score of 13-8 at 197 lbs. to set up the determining bout of the dual match in the heavyweight class. In the heavyweight match, UVa’s Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) posted a 10-3 victory over the Blue Devils’ Levi Karnehm to give the Cavaliers a 19-15 win.

With the victory, Virginia improves to 4-5 overall, 1-1 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke to 8-5 overall, 0-1 in the conference.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, February 3rd when Virginia travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face the North Carolina Tar Heels in an ACC dual match. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Duke will return to action on Wednesday, January 31 when the Blue Devils host Gardner-Webb.
