PRINCETON, N.J. – UVa men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) captured the singles and doubles titles at the Farnsworth/ Princeton Indoors in Princeton, N.J. Sunday (Jan. 28). Vahaly defeated Erik Scharf from St. Johns, 6-1, 7-5, in the singles final. He then teamed with Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) to win the doubles title with an 8-3 victory over Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock from Princeton.
Vahaly and Montgomery – who lost to Scharf in the singles semifinals on Saturday (Jan. 27) – will both participate in next weekend’s Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The tournament represents the third leg of the 2000-01 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Grand Slam. Vahaly advanced to the finals of the first leg of the grand slam, the T. Rowe Price Clay Court Championships, in singles. He also advanced to the doubles finals in each of the first two legs –the T. Row Price Clay Courts and the ITA All-American — with Montgomery.
The Rolex Indoors start Feb. 1 and run through Feb. 4, 2001.
