CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s swimming team will be represented by six swimmers at the 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday through Saturday, March 15-17 at the Nassua County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, Mass. The six swimmers representing UVa are: first-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School), second-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep), first-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep), fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s), second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), and third-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake). The Cavaliers tied for ninth at the 2000 NCAA Championships with 155 points, the second-highest UVa finish at the NCAA Championship.
Five of the six swimmers have qualified to compete in three individual events, while Roesch will swim in two events. The Cavaliers will also swim the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays. UVa is seeded 11th in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:17.97.
Baly will swim the 500 and 1650-yard free as well the 400-yard individual medley. Baly is seeded seventh in the 1650 free with a time of 16:15.92. Her time of 4:16.08 qualifies her 12th in the 400 IM. Baly is also the 17th seed in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.84.
Bosevska, the 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year, will compete in the 400 IM and the 500 and 1650 free. Bosevska is the fourth seed in the 400 IM with a time of 4:11.98 and is the 13th seed in the 1650 free (16:26.44). She is seeded 46th in the 500-yard free at 4:52.85. Bosevska was a first-team All-American in the 400 and 1500-meter free last season.
Dykehouse is UVa’s third competitor in the 500 free and is seeded 27th with a time of 4:48.07. She is the 26th seed in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.68) and is the 44th seed in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.42.
Lane is seeded in the top 10 of all three individual events she is competing in, including the top seed in the 1650 free with a time of 15:58.46. She won the 1500-meter free at the 2000 NCAA Championships, and in the process, became UVa’s first women’s NCAA swimming champion. She is the fifth seed in the in the 500 free (4:43.55) and the 10th seed in the 200 butterfly (1:59.03). Lane, who was named the ACC Meet’s Most Valuable Swimmer for the second-consecutive year, won the l650 free, 500 free and the 200 fly at the 2001 ACC Championship. Lane was also a first-team All-American in the 400 free and an honorable mention All-American in the 200 fly.
Iffland will swim the 50-yard free and the 100 and 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA Championships. Iffland is seeded 46th in the 50 free with a time of 23.40. She is seeded 14th in the 200 back (1:58.64) and 27th in the 100 back (55.38), which are her two best events. Iffland was an honorable mention All-American in the 100 back last year.
Roesch will compete in the 50 and 200-yard freestyles at the NCAAs. Roesch is seeded 31st in the 50 free (23.16) and 51st in the 200 free (1:50.01). Roesch is a two-time All-American as a member of Virginia’s relay teams at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
