Charlottesville, VA – The University of Virginia’s Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scooped up four ground balls, caused three turnovers, and tacked on four goals to help the #8 Cavaliers (3-1) turn back upset-minded Richmond (0-2) 16-10 today at Klockner Stadium. Sambus, a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy honoring the best female lacrosse player in the nation, is the fourth Cavalier to record a hat trick this season and notched three goals in a decisive 7-2 run in the middle of the game to put the Hoos in a lead they would not relinquish. In addition, eight of the Cavaliers’ 16 goals came on free position sets as the Hoos won their third game in a row.

The teams battled back and forth for most of the first period, with UVa tallying the first goal at 27:32 as Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) converted a free position. Richmond answered just over a minute later to tie the score. Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) caused a turnover in Virginia’s defensive arc and started a fast break that was finished by Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) who forced a shooting space foul and converted the 8-meter to put the Hoos back in front.

Richmond then scored two goals in a 47-second span to take a brief lead, but they lost the ball after winning the ensuing draw and Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scooped up the ball, drove to the cage and scored 17 seconds later to tie the game. Another Richmond turnover on a failed clear gave the ball back to the Cavaliers, and Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) put UVA back on top as she took a pass in the crease from Lauren and notched her first goal of the game. The Spiders tied the game just over a minute later, but the Hoos closed out the half with a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 lead at the break. Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) grubbed the rebound of a Hook shot and threw it back in the cage for the go-ahead goal at 10:49, and two minutes later Hook converted a shooting space foul into a two-goal cushion for the Cavaliers. Richmond interrupted the run with a goal at 3:01, but UVA hit two goals in the final two minutes as Sambus stuck a Lauren crease feed in the cage with a quickstick, and 35 seconds later Lacey (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) converted a dump from Haas into the Cavaliers’ eighth goal and a three-goal lead.

The Cavaliers extended the lead to 11-5 four minutes into the second half as Sambus flicked in a loose ball on the crease after a Cangemi 8-meter attempt and then was on the finishing end of a draw-and-dump from Haas one minute later. Cangemi’s free position at 25:31 gave the Hoos their largest lead of the game at 11-5. Richmond then scored three goals in three minutes, including a goal and an assist from Carrie Aitken to cut the deficit back to three at 11-8 with 18:13 to play.

The Cavalier defense started the next two goals to push the margin back to five. Courtney Muller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) broke a Spider clear and Lauren converted the foul in the arc at 15:06. K. K. Scharfe (Manchester, Ma./Governor Dummer) then drew a charge at the top of the eight, and on the fast break reset, found Cangemi who streaked up the field and found Morgan Thalenberg (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) in the middle of the eight, who converted the pass for a 13-8 lead at 13:09.

Richmond answered with a pair of goals of their own at 12:34 and 8:57, but from there the Cavalier defense held the Spiders off the board while the Hoos notched three goals on 8-meter shots to close the game. Again the defense came up big for UVA as Kenis intercepted a pass and started a clear that drew a three seconds call, converted by Thalenberg at 4:59. Sambus and Cangemi closed out the scoring for the Cavaliers as they converted free positions after Richmond fouls in the arc placed the Hoos on the line for a final score of 16-10.

The #8 Cavaliers continue their homestand with a game against #1 Maryland on Tuesday night, March 13, at 7:00 at Klockner Stadium.
