Six Virginia Women’s Swimmers Compete In Preliminaries In First Day Of NCAA Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – All six University of Virginia women’s swimmers who qualified for the NCAAs competed in the first day of preliminaries Thursday (March 15) at the 2001 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassua County Aquatic Center. Second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) was the lone Cavalier to advance to tonight’s championship final.

Lane, seeded fifth in the 500-yard free, posted a time of 4:41.79 to finish second in the preliminaries. Lane’s time broke her own school record of 4:43.21. Florida’s Janelle Atkinson recorded the top time in the prelims at 4:39.60. UVa second-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) finished 13th in the prelims with a time of 4:47.34 and will swim in the consolation final this evening. Virginia first-years Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) and Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) also competed in the 500 free and finished 22nd and 29th, respectively. Baly touched in 4:48.63, while Dykehouse registered a time of 4:50.53.

The Cavaliers had two competitors in the 50-yard freestyle as well. Third-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) tied for 32nd in the 50 free with a time of 23.32. Fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) clocked a time of 23.78 to finish 47th.

The Cavaliers tied for ninth place at the 2000 Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with 155 points. The ninth place tie is UVa’s second-best NCAA finish. The Cavaliers best performance was a seventh place finish with 173.5 points at the 1988 NCAA Championships.

The first of three final sessions for the 2001 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. Compete results can be obtained at www.ncaa.org. Friday’s preliminary events begin at 11:00 a.m.
