UVa’s Prichard Finishes 11th In 500 Freestyle At NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Virginia first-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) finished 11th in the 500-yard freestyle Thursday evening (March 22) at the 2001 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M’s Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Virginia also placed 12th in the 400-yard medley relay and 16th in the 400-yard freestyle relay. All three performances earned the UVa swimmers honorable mention All-America accolades.

After the first day of competition, Virginia stands in 17th place with 18 points. Texas leads the 2001 NCAA Championships with 185 points. Stanford is second with 170 points and Tennessee is third with 114.5 points.

Prichard clocked a time of 4:19.11 in Thursday evening’s consolation final of the 500-yard freestyle to finish 11th overall (fourth in the consolation final). Prichard qualified 10th for the evening session with a preliminary time of 4:19.14.

The Cavaliers placed 12th in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:15.56. First-year Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) swam the backstroke leg while first-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) swam the breaststroke leg, followed by first-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) in the butterfly. Fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) anchored the relay by swimming the freestyle leg. Virginia recorded a time of 3:15.86 in the prelims.

UVa also finished 16th in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.08. Johnson and first-years Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School), Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and Kerpelman swam legs on the relay. The Cavaliers touched in 1:20.27 in the preliminaries.

The 2001 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continue Friday with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. Central time. Finals begin Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Central time. Compete results can be obtained at www.ncaa.org.
