COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Virginia first-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) finished 15th in the 200-yard freestyle Friday evening (March 23) at the 2001 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M’s Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Virginia also finished 12th in the 800-yard free relay and 16th in the 200-yard medley relay with first-years comprising both relay squads. All three performances earned the UVa swimmers honorable mention All-America accolades.
After the second day of competition, Virginia stands in 18th place with 32 points. Texas leads the 2001 NCAA Championships with 447.5 points. Stanford is second with 337.5 points and Tennessee is third with 247.5 points.
Prichard posted a time of 1:37.38 in Friday evening’s consolation final of the 200-yard freestyle to finish 15th overall. Prichard qualified 11th for the evening session with a preliminary time of 1:36.74.
Prichard also anchored UVa’s 12th place 800-yard freestyle relay team that recorded a time of 6:33.46 in a timed final. First-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) swam the lead-off leg, followed by first-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School). First-year Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) swam the third leg and Prichard anchored the relay.
The Cavaliers placed 16th in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:30.57. Wagner swam the backstroke leg while first-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) swam the breaststroke leg, followed by Kerpelman in the butterfly. First-year Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) anchored the relay by swimming the freestyle leg. Virginia recorded a time of 1:30.35 in the prelims.
The 2001 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships conclude Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals commencing at 7:00 p.m. Central time. Compete results can be obtained at www.ncaa.org.
