COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Virginia first-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) finished 11th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle to advance to the consolation final Friday (March 23) at the 2001 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M’s Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Virginia also finished 16th in the 200-yard medley relay and advanced to tonight’s consolation final. The Cavaliers will compete in the timed final of the 800-yard freestyle relay as well.
Prichard clocked a time of 1:36.74 in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle and will compete in this evening’s consolation final. The Cavaliers also had three other competitors in the 200 free prelims. First-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) placed 28th with a time of 1:37.92, while first-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) was 35th with a time of 1:38.66. Fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) clocked a time of 1:39.16 to finish 39th in the 200 free.
The Cavaliers finished 16th in the prelims of the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:30.35 to move into the consolation final. UVa’s relay was composed of first-years Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit), Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville), Kerpelman and Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland).
Wagner also competed in the 100-yard backstroke and finished 24th with a time of 48.92. Marshall tied for 26th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.21.
Virginia is in 17th place with 18 points after the first night of finals. This evening’s finals of the 2001 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships get under way at 7:00 p.m. Central time. Compete results can be obtained at www.ncaa.org. The NCAA Championships conclude on Saturday.
