UVa Loses Varsity Eight And Varsity Four Races At ACC/Big 10 Women’s Rowing Regatta

CHARLOTTESVILLE–The University of Virginia women’s rowing team lost in the first varsity eight and first varsity four competitions to both the University of Michigan and Ohio State University in a regatta on Saturday (March 24) at Lake Monticello. Overall, Michigan won three of five races against Virginia, while the Cavaliers won three of five races against Ohio State.

In addition to its victories in the varsity eight and the varsity four, Michigan also defeated UVa in the second varsity eight. The Cavaliers beat Michigan in the second varsity four and the first novice eight. Michigan finished in a time of 6:32.6 and Virginia finished at 6:40.8 in the first varsity eight. In the first varsity four, the Wolverines had a time of 7:35.2 and UVa finished in 7:42.9. Michigan had a time of 6:41.38 in the second varsity eight and Virginia finished in 6:46.38. UVa won the first novice eight competition with a time of 7:02.8 and Michigan finished in 7:06.1. UVa “A” had a time of 7:41.2 in winning the second varsity four, while the Wolverines were second in 7:44.5 and UVa “B” was third in 8:05.7.

UVa lost the first varsity eight and first varsity four races to Ohio State, but the Cavaliers won the second varsity eight, the first novice eight and the second varsity four competitions. Ohio State finished in a time of 6:29.4 and Virginia finished at 6:37.0 in the first varsity eight. In the first varsity four, the Buckeyes had a time of 7:31.2 and UVa finished in 7:34.3. The Cavaliers had a time of 6:44.0 in the second varsity eight and Ohio State finished in 6:46.3. Virginia won the first novice eight with a time of 7:03.8 and the Buckeyes finished in 7:09.5. UVa “A” had a time of 7:51.6 in winning the second varsity four, while the Buckeyes were second in 8:04.8 and UVa “B” was third in 8:09.

“Michigan and Ohio State both raised the bar and we will respond,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said after the regatta. “Eight weeks from today are the NCAA Championships and we will get fitter, stronger, tougher and better every day of those eight weeks.”

The University of North Carolina competed against Ohio State and Michigan in the regatta. Ohio State won two of three races against North Carolina, while Michigan swept three races from the Tar Heels.

The Virginia men’s club rowing team competed against North Carolina at Lake Monticello on Saturday. The Cavaliers won three of four races against the Tar Heels. UVa won the novice eight, the second varsity eight and the varsity eight. North Carolina won the novice four competition.

The Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action on March 31 at the Rivanna Reservoir when the Cavaliers host Williams. The competition is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
