CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team recorded a 10-2 victory over the visiting N.C. State Wolfpack this afternoon at the UVa Baseball Field. After the Wolfpack jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, the Cavaliers scored 10 of the next 11 runs to gather their fourth Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season.

NCSU scored the first run of the game when Colt Morton (3-4, RBI, run) hit a solo home run to left-center field in the top of the first inning. But UVa answered right back with four, first inning runs of its own. Hunter Wyant (4-5, three RBI, two runs) started Virginia’s scoring off with a two-run, RBI-single to right field to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Dan Street (2-3, two RBI, run) drove in the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to right field before Eric Christensen hit an RBI-single up the middle to give Virginia a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jon Benick (4-5, three RBI, three runs) hit a solo home run to left-center field in UVa’s first at-bat of the inning. Two batters later, D. Street hit another solo home run to nearly the same spot to push the Cavaliers lead to 6-1. Two innings later (bottom of the fifth inning), Benick hit his second home run of the contest, this time a solo shot to left field to extend UVa’s lead to 7-1. Benick’s second home run of the game was his 11th of the season. Wyant scored another run later in the inning to make it an 8-1 ball game.

After Benick drove in the Cavaliers ninth run on an RBI- single which scored Doug Vroman (1-3, two runs) in the sixth inning, the Wolfpack finally scored their second run of the contest two innings later in the top of the eighth inning. NCSU’s Matt Butler (1-1) hit an RBI-single to right field to score Sam Esposito (2-2) to make it a 9-2 game. UVa scored the final run of the game when Wyant sent Vroman across the plate on an RBI-single to left field in the bottom of the inning.

The Cavaliers’ Joseph Koshansky (3-2) recorded his first ACC victory of his career after pitching 7.1 innings and allowing only two runs on 10 hits with a team-high five strikeouts. The Wolfpack’s Dan D’Amato (3-3) took the loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits with five strikeouts through 5.0 innings of play.

With the win, Virginia’s record improves to 15-9 overall, 4-4 in the ACC. The loss drops N.C. State’s record to 11-13 overall, 3-5 in the conference.

The Cavaliers and Wolfpack will return to action on Sunday, March 25th at 1:00 p.m. at the UVa Baseball Field.
